Throughout this book there was a reoccurring theme of traditional thinking versus new thinking. One of the areas of text was when Leah was sitting in the middle of the room and the men were deciding whether she would be allowed to go hunting with the men. Tata Ndu conducted an election to help be the final display of the decision. When the election was over, the votes were in favor of letting Leah hunt.
Tata Kuvudundu stated, "The Leopards will walk up right like men on our paths... You did this. You decided the old ways are no good (339)." Because of the change, Tata Kuvudundu was angry and wanted his control and power over his people back. The traditional ways were sustained and controlled originally by him. He must have been thinking that it is not right to convert to the new ways.
